What Hygiene Was Like For Medieval Peasants

Although cleanliness in the Middle Ages was primitive compared to what modern people enjoy, it doesn't mean medieval hygiene didn't exist. Despite living in an era long before indoor plumbing, shampoo, and nail salons, people used the best hygiene practices they could. Unfortunately, they didn't have a lot to work with. Peasants had it especially bad and weren't often able to afford luxuries like more than one set of clothing. For the lower classes, personal hygiene in the Middle Ages meant keeping clean however you could, even if it wasn't easy.

I was reading some comments and replies, and this is what I'm seeing. Hygiene was better in the ancient times. It basically went backwards during the Medieval era.

This video could have been better if you compared peasants from all over the world rather than just European peasants. For example Chinese peasants were the first to use paper made from silk to wipe themselves while peasants in desert climates didn't have cesspits but rather simply go do their business in the desert and bury their waste in the sand

Medieval era was as bogus as it could get. No car, no phone, no electricity, no running water. If they were asked to come back and try the "luxury" we have today, they would all come running. What were their lines to pick up girls?

Since there was no Home Depot or Miracle Grow at the time, human and animal waste was the only fertilizer available. So it's not a possibility that fruits and veggies were contaminated by disease, but a certainty. In fact, the Dutch discovered that using manure under the soil allowed the soil to maintain heat better, extending the growing season. Soon everyone was trying this. Oddly enough, this is one reason why outbreaks of polio were almost unheard of prior to the 20th century. Polio lives in waste and exposure to it allowed people to build up a certain resistance to the disease. Only when indoor plumbing became the norm in the early 20th century did people loose this resistance and the disease turned so very deadly. (And THAT is the only use I have ever gotten out of the term paper I was forced to write in High School on this. Still trying to find some use for the Algebra they made me study.)
Dude this shits awesome.

Its really hard to imagine living in present what those people went about their daily lives. For one, we never give a second thought to water supply in our modern homes. It seems, getting water for basic needs was a huge thing for those people. Really, we shouldn't judge the past with our present morals.

The lower medieval centuries in Northen Italy were certainly better organised. Most people had healthy eating habits and good dental. health, surviving Roman infrastructure was still available, new hospitals, water distribution network, increased textile production, made most citizens live a relatively healthy life in a relatively clean environment.

This just further convinces me that the human race was not evolved on this planet as this planet was not and is not as supportive of our form as it is for animals that clearly evolved along with the available natural things earth provides. We were definitely genetically modified and engineered by being from some place else.
