As I recall one of the Knicks stomped on the back of his foot while he was running up court late in this game which definitely could have hurt him and even that couldn't stop him

Also, McAdoo wasn't exactly dogging it. But yeah, Maravich was something else.

He was Steph Curry before Curry- Maravich would have flourished in the current NBA. If they were playing any games.

IF you could take 6-9 230 Forward Larry BIRD in his prime - then SHRINK Bird down to a skinny 6-5 195 Guard - then take AWAY Bird's HOF NBA TEAMMATES - then take AWAY Bird's NBA 3pt line - then ADD to Bird amazing basketball artistry & wizardry - then ADD to Bird lightning fast speed-athleticism-agility - then ADD HOLY GOD to Bird's life after retirement: You'd have the ONE & ONLY "PISTOL PETE" MARAVICH! "Inch-for-inch-pound-for-pound" - the GREATEST Basketball Player world will likely EVER SEE! JOHN 3:3 ;16-18 @t

Walt Frazier was assigned to guard Pete at the beginning of this game. Earl Monroe, another HOf'er came up to Frazier at half time and asked what was wrong. Frazier said" why don't you try to guard him ?

I firmly can’t imagine a player that was more complete and humble. Pete is my choice for 'greatest'! Interesting to see Shelton as such a good scorer as when he was with Seattle he was more of a defender and enforcer.

I remember this game. WOR Ch 9 with Andy Musser and Cal Ramsey. It was pretty rare for us to see Pete Maravich in NY. My family and Most here didn't have cable in 1977 and only the away Knick games were on free TV. I think the Jazz only played the Knicks twice a year, so Pete probably wanted to put on a little show this night for TV audiences in New York.

How many of these would have been three's?
Michael Jor1-9an
I counted 11 would be three pointers, plus the 2 from the bogus charge call that should've counted, which would've put him at 81, tied for second in a single game.

If there was 3-point shot then.it would be massacre most of the time.
Philip Ross
Philip Ross Month ago
yeah, but he probably hit a lot of 3 p ... oh, never mind.
Anthony Matthews
Just in his first 7 points scored, a 3 pt line would have made two of those first 3 baskets 3pters. So, he would have had at minimum 70 assuming he takes all the other shots that he did, and makes them as he did.

28:37 is the perfect example of why people who say James Harden and other modern players would average 50 a game in the 70s are completely wrong. They’d turn the ball over every possession!

Dude, let's give some more respect to Pistol Pete (RIP) - if it weren't for innovative players who took the game over the top, we would not have a continuously evolving game that gets better with every generation. Pete showed future generations how to use both hands to dribble, how to cross over behind the back, and that made the game better. Without Pete, we might not have Kyrie, Steph and James Harden, but to say that today's players are not better than those of the 70's is to defile Pete's legacy. It is because of Pete that Steph Curry is better than any guard from the old days. BTW, Steph's shooting percentage from 3 pt range is about the same as Pete's was from 2 pt range. Give the pioneers credit by acknowledging their contribution to the game's progress.

Took me 16 minutes to notice but why is the game being shown in black and white? In 1977?!
Your Royal Highness
Would you rather be the highest scorer in NCAA history or a three-time NCAA champion who is universally regarded as college basketball’s greatest player? Plus, the latter is also regarded as the greatest high school player ever AND regarded by many as the greatest NBA player ever. I have great respect for both. In fact, I got to see Pete Maravich play several times when he was a youngster on the Atlanta Hawks. I was 11-12 years old. Pete would put on a dazzlingly display in warmups that thrilled the crowd. I had hoped to see the other fellow that I hinted about but his team did not visit Atlanta in the short time that I lived there. Either that or my stepfather didn’t get tickets. Not sure which. At any rate, both players were great in their own way. Rest In Peace, Pistol.

There were 2 terrible charging calls on Pistol, the last one causing him to foul out. Otherwise, he would have had well over 70, and that's without a 3 point line! What a treat it was to watch this. What an amazing player he was! So smooth and decisive with the ball....way ahead of his time. My late father was a coach and was a huge Pistol Pete fan. I remember my dad having me watch and study Pete's "Maravich Drills" videos. I practiced these ball handling drills religiously, and used some of them as warm up drills before practice and games. Of course, I (or no one else for that matter) could come close to doing what Pistol could do on a basketball court. Equally amazing, is that Pete accomplished all of this with a defective heart. Thanks for posting this, you made my day!

As a high school student in the late 60s, I distinctly remember Pete dropping 50+ on my beloved Wildcats. However, the UK Wildcats would still win by 20+ over LSU. Pete was truly inimitable.

With all the technology we have today, the NBA needs to computerize this game and put in a 3 point line. Then recalculate Pete's total!

@Bob S the replay shows the defensive man moving under Pete as he made the layup. Pete wrongly got called for the foul. Foul number 3 , Pete had position on a pass to make a steal and he stole the ball.
