Golf's distance debate, explained.
Become a Video Lab member! bit.ly/video-lab
These days, pro golfers are hitting the ball far. Really far. And it's creating a problem: because modern golfers can reach the hole with fewer shots than before, older courses -- like Augusta National Golf Club, Oakmont Country Club, and others -- are becoming obsolete. Now, professional organizations, like the United States Golf Association, are struggling to find a solution for big powerful golfers like Dustin Johnson, Bubba Watson, and Tiger Woods. While the jump in distance is due to lots of factors, conversation is centering on the controversial possibility of redesigning the golf ball to reduce distance. It'd be the latest turn in the ball's long history: Golf balls have evolved from "featheries," to gutties, to balata balls, and eventually dimpled modern balls. But the biggest, and most recent change? The almost-instantaneous switch from wound balls to solid core multilayer balls like the Titleist Pro V1.

Why is it so hard to make a specific ball for the PGA? MLB has no issue with this.

Who else thought that when he said gutties it was gonna be leather and guts
Think Different Music Group
Clearly the PGA don’t have any regulations if their allowing modifications to the golf ball, imagine if in the MLB they would allow hollowed out cork bats and lighter baseballs everybody would be a slugger.

4:35 did he say *a heavier ball would fall more quickly* ? If yes: acceleration towards earth is independent of mass🤔🤔🤔🤔

@Hirvee5 But why? Mass has no effect on the acceleration

Why wouldn't you put dimples on racecars to reduce drag instead of smooth surfaces? Is it because the golf ball is spherical?

If a pro makes something hard look easy that means he has skill. I think it's disrespectful to change the game so that years of dedication and hard work is punished! I for one like watching pro athletes pull of feats that I could never do. Maybe I'm just crazy but I think that's how it should be .

waste of lands bad effects on environment your performance assisted a lot by high-tech equipment every records can be broken by the fact that anyone can change the size of field, or just born later and you automatically get higher results Golf is purely a richers's entertainment, and costly on any perspectives

Sounds like other players are just mad they arent able to pull off a hit that good. Good goofball still a level playing field no reason to reduce its quality lol. As long as all players use the same type.

But the multilayered ball(s) can only explain the steep rise for the next few years (until nearly all players have switched), maybe up until 2003 if you look at the graph of relative ball type usage they show. What explains the relatively steep and steady rise from ca. 1994 up to ca. 2005? Did they just have a decade of annually vastly improved golf balls? Just looking at the graph, the 2000/2001 jump is pretty steep, but it doesn't stand out too much from the overall trend which took a decade. I think this video was too focused on that 1 type of ball and ignored the rest.
