Golf's distance debate, explained.
Become a Video Lab member! bit.ly/video-lab
These days, pro golfers are hitting the ball far. Really far. And it's creating a problem: because modern golfers can reach the hole with fewer shots than before, older courses -- like Augusta National Golf Club, Oakmont Country Club, and others -- are becoming obsolete. Now, professional organizations, like the United States Golf Association, are struggling to find a solution for big powerful golfers like Dustin Johnson, Bubba Watson, and Tiger Woods. While the jump in distance is due to lots of factors, conversation is centering on the controversial possibility of redesigning the golf ball to reduce distance. It'd be the latest turn in the ball's long history: Golf balls have evolved from "featheries," to gutties, to balata balls, and eventually dimpled modern balls. But the biggest, and most recent change? The almost-instantaneous switch from wound balls to solid core multilayer balls like the Titleist Pro V1.

Distance for amateurs doesn't mean that much because we still don't score well lol. But it makes a difference for them for sure, but more distance also means more trouble.
Steve Winter

Driving distance doesn't mean accuracy. Also. things like tougher pin placements, longer fairway rough. These are things to help make a golf hole harder.

So that's why some holes have more than one tee?

Oh please... Let them play the better ball... It'll allow for more dramatic play and higher TV ratings right? Win win for everyone... I say allow steroid use too... I mean if the athlete knows the risks and still wants too risk his or her health just for the sake of being the best athlete in any given sport I say why not... Go for it... You'll be a shooting star that'll be dead by age 49 but you'll be a legend and the game will be more exciting.... Or you can choose NOT to take steroids and remain a normal human... Your choice... With one caviat... No sueing anyone when your body starts to rot due to self inflicted damage caused by the steroids...

The golf ball is probably 1/10th of why everyone’s hitting it farther. New tech like the go quad let’s pros optimize every club in the bag by finding the perfect shafts, seeing their strike with high speed cameras and much more.

Contrary to the opinion of the USGA and its open, perhaps we shouldn't be too caught up on what par is anymore. Better to see a champion at 13 under rather than footage of curators desperately watering greens during the course of play...

Problem is, in my mind, golf takes up a crazy amount of room as it is and a ball that goes further only encourages even larger courses. That kind of land use isn't a problem in, say, the Midwest where there's a lot of room. But where I live, in Oregon? A lot of this land could be used by others so they stay out of the more undisturbed natural areas, or could be returned to nature. Yeah yeah, the dude from Oregon's a hippy that wants to help nature, maaaan. But honestly, that's important out here, and I'm actually fine with keeping land around so it can be SUSTAINABLY used by hunters and the timber industry. And surprise, timber is a big damn deal out here, though a lot of our golf land is in wide open areas that would be floodplains. A lot of our land is like that actually, something those of you dealing with the flooding currently hitting this area are very aware of. So, I could see an argument for reduced flight balls, or at the very least capping it where it is rather than expanding even further, because it's just going to encourage bigger courses, and potentially hose smaller country clubs that have to choose between being outdone by the big course, making its golfers use reduced flight balls, or selling cheap. But, maybe golfers will choose to use reduced flight balls because they think it's too much, like when my grandpa started bow hunting because hunting with his rifle was too easy and not fun anymore. I'd like that solution more, and maybe the pro scene would follow. But considering how slowly the change is happening, I wonder if that'll happen.

I love Titleist balls. I have played them since I picked up golf at 7 years old(1994). But todays balls are so much better its ridiculous. But it isnt the only problem.. Drivers and fairway metals should be kept more in check than the ball.

I think it's not a huge deal because even with a ball from another dimension made with nano technology, unless a ball is made that adjusts automatically somehow to get in the center, you still have to be able to square your clubface, swing on the correct plane, and aim to the right spot in order to play this game somewhat like the pros. That is not an easy feat. What will need to be addressed imho is if a driver comes out that literally doesn't care where the heck on the face you hit it, it'll still go straight and long. The skill needs to be maintained. One thing I would like to see eliminated is the greens reading books. If you don't know about this, look it up. I say the golfer on the hole either reads his putt, or he does not.

3:39 that chart is very misleading. It seemed as if the multi-layered ball is medium on both Distance and Accuracy. You should have drawn it like a square, with axes being Distance and Accuracy.

Golf is the only sport where you get to choose what to play with rather than the governing body. Why? Money. In squash the Pros play a different grade of ball. You can play it too but it's better to play a ball of your skill level. The golf ball will keep going further because the manufacturers will simply take the governing body to court if you limit them.

Good video, totally inaccurate, but a good video none the less. I'd imagine that since the Pro v1 came out in October 2000 it had no real bearing on that year's driving distance. It was the Rule 35 that was the first multi layer ball. The increase between 2001-2002 was mostly down to the ERC 2 driver.

I really like how this video ended! The BALL is not the problem here, it's the outdated golf courses! Why would we neuter our advancements in ball technology just to keep the old, short, outdated courses?? The world is evolving, and the game of golf doesn't get an exemption from the rest...
