The North River Tunnels connect Manhattan to New Jersey and the West. 820,000 people and 450 trains pass under the Hudson River through these 2.5 miles tunnels every day. But these tunnels were built 120 years ago and they are showing their age. Now, New York has a dangerous tunnel problem on its hands. Cheddar explains how it got this bad and whats being done about it.

Thanks for an accurate and frank look into the realities of New York City and its historical attempts into trying to please everyone while trying to maintain cash flow in the face of common concern and political complications. These tunnels are indispensable to the city and state as well as the country as a whole.

This is unsettling given the amount of times I go from south Jersey so nyc. I truly hope the find a good solution to this. I love Penn Station. It’s basically my childhood. You move so fast (usually) you don’t pay attention to what it looks like. But to lifelong visitors, it’s looks are charming. However, it does need expansion desperately. It always has because as soon as they finish renovating they’ve outgrown the new size. It has an iconic look however quirky it may be. Not to mention the folks who commute daily from South Jersey and beyond on NJ Transit.

usa broke country is not only broken , but this incredible country is broke... Broke and in debt... debt? Trillions... How many trillions? hardly matters... 1 debt clock says 26 trillion... The other one says 45 TRILLION... why the heck are we in $1 of debt? Doesn't the government print its own money? Surely the FED is part of government right? heck no... The Federal Reserve Bank Corporation is the biggest liar in the world... Also the biggest counterfeitter in the world... Also the biggest briber in the world... Also the biggest blackmailer in the world... who is the Fed? the 'fed' is part of the Central Bank Dynasty... The CBD owns and runs all central banks around the world... what does this mean? it means that Rockefeller and Rothschild own and operate the CBD which is to say the Central Bank Dynasty and therefore have their hands on all money creation... All money creation makes them the richest cartel there is... It also makes them the most powerful organization in the world... More powerful than any number of nuclear weapons... zzzzzzzz 99% don't see this...let me sum it up like this die falscher LENDS government spends makes i r s extract to pay the loanshark back

When President Trump finally dismantles the liberal system, along with the clowns mentioned in this video, that have destroyed our financial system and country, we will return to a long term credit system that will fund all these great national infrastructure projects... Hence a return to the American System of economics, Lincoln employed to rebuild America after our civil war.

I've got a solution. Floating Bridges, built in sections, with lots of stretchy material connecting the sections. Unused sections can be floated off and repaired, or kept in reserve. The elevation of the bridge can change, depending on flooding or sea rise. Unlike tunnels, such bridges cannot be flooded, since they are above sea-level. - Roads or railroads can be laid on top of the sections. - The center part would need to be elevated, to allow the passage of ships. - Size would be important, to provide a large amount of buoyancy to support the weight of the vehicles and/or trains. Width is necessary for stability and balance. - Poles sunk into the riverbed could provide a significant amount of horizontal stability, while the giant platforms gently rise up or down.

Here's a shocking idea. Every infrastructure project (new or repair) *MUST INCLUDE* the creation of an *Endowment* to provide funding for future maintenance and repairs. Break the cycle of _Build it, then expect future taxpayers' to maintain it._

Before the advent of electrically powered locomotives, steam trains were banned in NYC. They didn't want huge plumes of coal smoke filling the air, choking the citizenry and blackening everything in sight with soot. When overhead power lines feeding electrical trains were invented, the Pennsylvania Railroad had the two tunnels dug under the Hudson river AT THEIR OWN EXPENSE, mainly using manual labor, as this was long before tunneling machines. Prior to that, ferries brought passengers from the end of the line in NJ directly into Manhattan. This is an example of how much more efficient private enterprise is compared to government. The Pennsylvania Railroad, a BUSINESS rather than GOVERNMENT, deemed it profitable to dig the tunnels and maintain them. Once government took over, maintenance was deferred to the point where we have what we have. A business wants to protect its investment, while government wants to siphon profits to "boards of directors" and "authorities." Now, it really doesn't matter. DiBlasio, Antifa, BLM, and the DemPanic-Plandemic have sealed the fate of NYC, and it is only a matter of time until it is virtually empty. People and businesses are moving out in record numbers. Kinda sad, really.

Trump and the Republicans are to blame for not providing their fair share. Why should only New York State foot the bill when the entire country benefits? Where is Amtrak's contribution? New Jersey Transit? The state of NJ? No, let's just let New Yorkers pay for it all. We have an entire state to care for, those people upstate barely generate enough taxes to sustain themselves. That's why Cuomo is constantly raiding the MTA's piggy bank.

If Obama "negotiated a deal" to fix this, why didn't any of it get fixed during the 8 years he was president, 4 of them after Sandy? And as stated around 9:00, did the sea level really rise about a foot? They should get Musk to redo these tunnels with his Boring Company, it would probably be much cheaper than using Cuomo's friends.

My thoughts... it seems necessary, and useful. However, implying that it being unfinished is trumps fault. That is wrong, why should the federal government pay for any percentage of this project? Its a city infrastructure project in the financial capital of the U.S.(possibly the world). The city should pay for it. If the money isn't there i recommend they take a hard look at their spending. Stop wasting money and spend it on something useful. Lasty, I'll say again, the federal government should NOT pay any portion of the cost. New York being financially irresponsible does not entitle them to my Ohio tax money. It only entiles an audit in my opinion. Pay for your own damn infrastructure.

So Shumer and the other Dems are holding Trump Hostage with their demand to keep the Flood of illegal migrants flowing into the U.S. so the Democrat elected officials can continue violating federal and state laws giving them benefits funded by taxes paid by citizens, to buy their votes. Screw That. A lot of citizens of all races and ethnicities are sick of the Democrat Party screwing them for the last half century. The Democrats Þ¡$$ on our heads and tell us it's Raining. That's why for the first time in a century, the ethnic groups the Democrat Party thought they owned, are leaving them to vote Republican. But thanks for the History. I dont see how its that complicated to replace them with new ones. In Sydney, they sunk tunnels into the harbor and pumped the water out for car bypass Dug even deeper tunnels under the water for metro line. NYC's budget is way bigger than Sydney's so should be capable.

Just agree to the wall. Sorry, New York. You're not America's only concern. Gotta draw the line from which to negotiate and I think this is as good a place as any. Tens of millions of people along the Southern border think a wall is just as important as a tunnel. Tell your Dem reps and Senators about your hopes and dreams and then vote Repub to get it done.
