The North River Tunnels connect Manhattan to New Jersey and the West. 820,000 people and 450 trains pass under the Hudson River through these 2.5 miles tunnels every day. But these tunnels were built 120 years ago and they are showing their age. Now, New York has a dangerous tunnel problem on its hands. Cheddar explains how it got this bad and whats being done about it.

This is unsettling given the amount of times I go from south Jersey so nyc. I truly hope the find a good solution to this. I love Penn Station. It’s basically my childhood. You move so fast (usually) you don’t pay attention to what it looks like. But to lifelong visitors, it’s looks are charming. However, it does need expansion desperately. It always has because as soon as they finish renovating they’ve outgrown the new size. It has an iconic look however quirky it may be. Not to mention the folks who commute daily from South Jersey and beyond on NJ Transit.

I've got a solution. Floating Bridges, built in sections, with lots of stretchy material connecting the sections. Unused sections can be floated off and repaired, or kept in reserve. The elevation of the bridge can change, depending on flooding or sea rise. Unlike tunnels, such bridges cannot be flooded, since they are above sea-level. - Roads or railroads can be laid on top of the sections. - The center part would need to be elevated, to allow the passage of ships. - Size would be important, to provide a large amount of buoyancy to support the weight of the vehicles and/or trains. Width is necessary for stability and balance. - Poles sunk into the riverbed could provide a significant amount of horizontal stability, while the giant platforms gently rise up or down.

Before the advent of electrically powered locomotives, steam trains were banned in NYC. They didn't want huge plumes of coal smoke filling the air, choking the citizenry and blackening everything in sight with soot. When overhead power lines feeding electrical trains were invented, the Pennsylvania Railroad had the two tunnels dug under the Hudson river AT THEIR OWN EXPENSE, mainly using manual labor, as this was long before tunneling machines. Prior to that, ferries brought passengers from the end of the line in NJ directly into Manhattan. This is an example of how much more efficient private enterprise is compared to government. The Pennsylvania Railroad, a BUSINESS rather than GOVERNMENT, deemed it profitable to dig the tunnels and maintain them. Once government took over, maintenance was deferred to the point where we have what we have. A business wants to protect its investment, while government wants to siphon profits to "boards of directors" and "authorities." Now, it really doesn't matter. DiBlasio, Antifa, BLM, and the DemPanic-Plandemic have sealed the fate of NYC, and it is only a matter of time until it is virtually empty. People and businesses are moving out in record numbers. Kinda sad, really.

My thoughts... it seems necessary, and useful. However, implying that it being unfinished is trumps fault. That is wrong, why should the federal government pay for any percentage of this project? Its a city infrastructure project in the financial capital of the U.S.(possibly the world). The city should pay for it. If the money isn't there i recommend they take a hard look at their spending. Stop wasting money and spend it on something useful. Lasty, I'll say again, the federal government should NOT pay any portion of the cost. New York being financially irresponsible does not entitle them to my Ohio tax money. It only entiles an audit in my opinion. Pay for your own damn infrastructure.

I dont see how its that complicated to replace them with new ones. In Sydney, they sunk tunnels into the harbor and pumped the water out for car bypass Dug even deeper tunnels under the water for metro line. NYC's budget is way bigger than Sydney's so should be capable.
