An Iconic Dance Scene in 80s Movie History! Proud to say, I was a teen in the 1980s... So cool (or "on fleek"?) that so many wish to have lived in this Great Decade! I'm now a 50 year old teenager ;)

Iconic. For some reason, this little movie - and, particularly, this scene - transcends the decades. I was about the same age as these actors when this came out and everybody had to see it. It spoke to a generation.

Is it weird that I dance like Molly and almost everyone else mixed together when I hear music that sounds similar to the song in this video even though I’m only 17 and born in 2002?

Y'all know goth didn't exist when this movie came out right? A lot of folks keep callin' Ally sheedy's character a goth girl... She wasn't a goth. If she listened to metal she'd have been a "death rocker" and if not she was just a freak. I was 14 at the time... Usually considered a death rocker and everyone I knew said I reminded them of her... Without the using dandruff for snowflakes part LMAO.

xAbominationx I was 15 when Breakfast Club came out, and was associated with a scene that self identified as ‘Goth’ then - the term was coined in the early 80s and was mentioned by Siouxsie and Ian Astbury as well as many UK mags. And there were plenty of us aware of it in 1985, at least in the NY area, due to availability of British press, WLIR radio, great record stores, etc. Your post said it ‘didn’t exist’ ... well, yes it wasn’t mainstream, but it definitely was a ‘thing’ and did exist.
xAbominationx
xAbominationx Year ago
@limesparks read my post. I was 14- nearly 15, when the movie came out, do a little math and you cant hit damn close to the mark (not said rudely). And yes all those bands were popular at the time, however, goth was not a movement or even a thing in the US, it still hadn't really made it across the pond since punk was never as big here as it was in the UK. In the US metal was more mainstream, if at the time either could be considered so. Death rocker was the term typically assigned to people that did the dark look. Freak if they weren't into metal or the hard rock of the time. Modern aka 1988 and on, Goth had influences from metal, new wave, and tons from punk and in 85 the possibility of any of those subcultures interacting was virtually zero. In fact until the movie Beetlejuice goth really didn't even have a "look" it was just black clothes and heavy makeup. After Lydia appeared on screen however the adoption of the "Prince" victorian look but in all black became standard, with influences from the pseudo 18th century dress of such metal gods as Ronnie James Dio.

xAbominationx huh? How old are you? Goth was HUGE when this movie came out - The Cure, Bauhaus, Joy Division, etc etc all were well known. That said I strongly question whether Ally Sheedy’s character and Bender would have danced to this track.
