Bender (Judd Nelson) starts causing trouble in detention and questions the value of high school clubs.
John Hughes wrote and directed this quintessential 1980s high school drama featuring the hottest young stars of the decade. Trapped in a day-long Saturday detention in a prison-like school library are Claire, the princess (Molly Ringwald); Andrew, the jock (Emilio Estevez); John, the criminal (Judd Nelson); Brian, the brain (Anthony Michael Hall); and Allison, the basket case (Ally Sheedy). These five strangers begin the day with nothing in common, each bound to his/her place in the high school caste system. Yet the students bond together when faced with the villainous principal (Paul Gleason), and they realize that they have more in common than they may think, including a contempt for adult society. "When you grow up, your heart dies," Allison proclaims in one of the film's many scenes of soul-searching, and, judging from the adults depicted in the film, the teen audience may very well agree. Released in a decade overflowing with derivative teen films, The Breakfast Club has developed an almost cult-like status.

I love this scene. I love every scene really. But this scene is so well done by Hughes how Bender compares Brian's academic clubs to Claire's social clubs. She wouldn't be accepted into Brian's math clubs just like Bender wouldn't be accepted in her social clubs.

The Physics Club. "We talk about physics we discuss physics" Demented and sad? Those "demented and sad" people not only invented the internet, but now control the world of computers. So your laptop, device, smart phone, whatever you are watching this on, is all thanks to people like Brendon.

"Well in psychics club we talk about psychics". Ya think lol.
For those of you who don’t know, Molly Ringwald would later play Mary Andrews on Riverdale, and that show had a flashback episode called The Midnight Club, which has similar parallels to this movie. Anthony Michael Hall guest-starred in that episode.

She annoys me with how she is like "that's an academic club" as if 1 - it automatically does not count, and 2 - she wouldn't be in it as she is a pretty girl. Simultaneously saying that being academic cannot be 'cool' AND that girls like her cannot be 'academic'. Talk about setting feminism back a billion years. Thank god getting As is seen as cool in modern times, since in the 80s being smart seemed to be a big set back.
People are much dumber now , especially school kids

You look back on high school and you realize nothing was quite what it looked like because your eyes were just that fresh that sunlight was too bright for them to see and the dark was too dark for flashlights and lava lamps and incense. Kids, there is life after high school.

Todd Bridges mentioned how he was originally linked to play Bender's role as it would have depicted a Black teenager who was troubled and he would have all the hardships of being a young Black student in which the different types of teens in a high school would have authentically been represented. But apparently Hughes and his partner, instead of investing in what would have been a very important character, they chose not to cause they ''didn't know how to write about Blacks''. Obviously Judd Nelson played Bender very well and maybe it wouldn't have been as impactful for multiple reasons if they went with the other way but that definitely is a better idea undeniably in terms of genuinely wanting to have a culturally connected movie as was the point of this film's conception.

It isn't necessary. Back when this film was made, it was new to dive into the dynamics of what made teens the way they are with social barriers created between themselves. But now? That's been done plenty of times. As for a sequel, also not necessary. The ambiguity of "will they remain friends on monday" is supposed to linger in your thoughts because the answer is "probably not."

The funny thing about the contrast between Claire and Brian is that you would think being smart would earn you more money, but given Claire's background it's all about social organization. You can even see it on their parents cars and how they dress.

God, the way Bender looks at Claire the whole time. He was attracted to her from the beginning, but didn’t think she would ever notice/be with a guy like him. Even though she was also eyeing him. Definitely one of my favorite enemies/haters-turned-lovers pairings!
