Trigger warning for loud sounds towards the end of the vid.
This was entirely edited, and was supposed to be exported, in 48fps, not 50. Funny thing is, Premiere simply doesn't allow custom frame rates in its export window, despite supporting it as a sequence setting. I could have exported the Premiere file into After Effects and added the sequence to the render cue, but I couldn't because AE threw me an error every time I tried. That, combined with the legitimately unbelievable amount of bugs and errors and crashes left me feeling so exhausted and numb that I ultimately decided it was worth sacrificing one 25th of a second's worth of timing here and there. If you catch any editing errors, that'd be why. Oh well!!

Fantastic rant, I love it! And you're absolutely right. I love how you underline the intent of the artist. Those who would seek to replace artists with machine learning and AI clearly don't understand what art is for. Replace stuff that people don't want to do, or can't do. But people get joy (and their livelihood) from creating art, and they want to do it. It's one of the things that make us human. I'm no Luddite, and I love using new tools to create my animation. But when it starts to encroach upon the fulfillment that I get from creating, then no thanks! You might argue that this is just interpolation and chill out. But my response to that is just wait, this is just getting started.

@Aaron B. nah, thats reality. im fkn tired of slideshows. i cant play consoles coz of 30 fps which are just static pictures for me. most of ppl cant see the difference between 40 and 50 fps due to low iq, for example, while high iq ppl can see the difference between 60 and 70 or 100 and 120 and so on. my eyes actually hurt when im watching something with less than 60 fps for too long coz it creates too much tension.

I've always hated it when people give that Naruto vs. Pain fight so much shit. Like of course it's gonna look like shit on a still frame, the entire point of smear frames and squash/stretch is to simulate motion. If you recorded someone getting slapped, then slowed it down and paused it, you'd literally see vibrations and muscle/skin contort and stretch. It's fine to say you thought it looked silly, it's another thing to say it's bad animation

Ok like yea the ai isnt good and different frame rates can be used artistically but honestly these days even 60 looks like a slide show and yes smoother animation is better like he said when the artist intends it, honestly i cant enjoy shows or movies anymore because of the fact that i can count every individual frame, I see this 24 fps thing as a snobby traditionalist tactic, its like when musicians say "this is boring its not even in 7/8 with polyrythms and 12 note chords" i made every single film in my film class in 60 fps and the teacher called me out for it every time while the entire class complimented me on how smooth it was, if you like 24 fps thats fine but i know tons of people who dont like it but say "oh but all of these great film makers used it" and its like no you just want to render to not take as long

This video undermines how impressive that AI actually is. Generating new information isn't trivial and some examples do look pretty good. But you are missing one fundamental point: It's just a tool. Sure if you have no intent and don't know how to use it, the result often looks worse. But if you know how and when to use it, it's actually pretty amazing. Being mad at this AI is like being mad at a hammer.

I'm a gamer...But I am also a game designer. And nearing the end of my 5 year long course I have opened my eyes to EVERY LITTLE FUCKING DETAIL AND MISTAKE I CAN'T PLAY GAMES NORMALLY AGAIN! I tried learning animation and wanted to become a 3D animator. Alas, my lectuerer at the time dropped a big fucking book of the priniciples of animation on my desk and told me to read through it and write about it. I no longer wanted to become an animator. Basically, what I am saying in a roundabout way is, I am a gamer and I don't think 60fps animations is a must have in all animations. There are games that function REALLY WELL and uses the principles of animation to their advantage. If you were to slap on 60k frames on fucking z-fighters it would probably lose a good chunk of players.

It's basically just making the animation slower by adding more frames, that's why the ai is usually used for sports to do slow mo's

I guess there's some valid criticism, but this video is basically about a tool that makes your art more enjoyable to a different audience. I don't get it. Either you obsess over your animation to an unhealthy point where you are the only one who can do what you do, or you are running some form of damage control because you're afraid that people will start to demand animations to be in 60 FPS. Reminds me of the Ubisoft representative who came out and said that a game feels more "cinematic" in 30 FPS that it does in 60. I genuinely can't see why you are pissed at an opportunity for more people to enjoy your and others art. I feel you might be as proprietary as Disney or Nintendo with your work.
Knoxlock 2 hours ago
@LunorZ Agreed. That's why i mentioned that he had some valid criticism, but when such hate evolves to the point where an artist figuratively/indirectly says: "No, you may only enjoy the art in the way I intended it to be enjoyed" it becomes a tad bit ridiculous.
Knoxlock 2 hours ago
@Dario Flores Since those changes aren't classified as fair use, there should be no problem claiming videos or "ai-generated"-versions of your animations and if people start to complain you may actually realize there is a market for those kinds of animation and a gateway for the audience who enjoys animations best when they're in 60 fps.
Dario Flores
Dario Flores 3 hours ago
thats not the main problem, the REAL problem is the people taking already made work that took time and dedication and slapping it into the program and posting it on youtube for free views.

In my film class, we learn why is commonly used 24 FPS in a lot of movies that are not animated, because giving it more starts to feel unrealistic, and if it’s an action movie you start to see the fake parts of the action and it ruins your experience. That’s why 60 fps is commonly used now in video games intended for it. The majority of action games where you move the camera clearly benefits from it, same for some fighting games where the “meta people” dedicates a lot of time for counting the FPS hit box counting, that’s what makes certain characters beginner friendly than others.

Zootopia actually used a different framerate when making the movie, thats why it was well known for having buttery smooth animation and was the start of this whole increase of framerate trend, people were so impressed by the new framerate that more animators started applying it to their animations, to know more search up Zootopia Rule 34 and how they used 34 framerates to revolutionize animation

Thanks for generalizing all gamers in your rant man, real nice. Also, 'AI' doesn't improve- it does. People find more and more ways to make AI smarter and smarter. I understand your argument of giving the artist control of the end product and control of the AI but other than that it just sounds like you're upset that some people really enjoy the idea of a new style of high frame rate animation and are excited to see that AI might be something that helps in making that possible one day. Tl:dr: chill. Let people be happy.
Arooj Basit Malik
Arooj Basit Malik 3 hours ago
@-ABIC- it is pretty normal for people to have one job and a different hobby, it's not that big of a surprise. Also that drug example is a bad example. Because one is physically harming and the other isn't. Robots aren't gonna take your job so besides aesthetics you have absolutely no argument. And aesthetics are opinionated. I did find this to be a civil conversation, yes. I wish I understood your argument beyond aesthetics- I tried to understand it as much as I could. I hope you got to see the other side of the argument even if your opinion didn't have an effect(which is not why I commented in the first place. Not here to change opinions)
-ABIC- 4 hours ago
@Arooj Basit Malik wow you have a lot of job/hobby then, and still you can't see or understand the points in it, also the drug part was an example, i never intended to say that these AI make any harm to anyone, and for the job part... yes, for animations it is a problem if robot start taking the job, as it's just technicaly impossible for them to replicate art because they are r o b o t programmed to do things in step, they don't have any feelings or anything that make them go into precision in any art, and i don't want to be repeatitive on my arguments so i just let the next one respond to you (if there's even someone finding this conversation), we may continue this debate but for now i just want to rest from it, and if you want to answer your arguments about mine just look up at the entire conversation and this video, for now, i just hope this was not ridicule for both of us, and i hope this was concidered as a civil conversation for you
Arooj Basit Malik
Arooj Basit Malik 4 hours ago
@-ABIC- You can assume that I didn't read everything you said but it's not true. And yes, it's still opinion. I knew this argument of if people like drugs it's okay for hem to like it was going to come up no matter how many times I say 'let people like what they like as long as there is no harm in it.' Drugs physically harm a person. A little AI interpolation between two frames doesn't. And if your argument is that an AI hurts the artist physically/emotionally/mentally because it drew a frame between two frames, then that is just plain falsehood. What people enjoy in a medium changes and grows whether you like it or not. And if you don't evolve with it and complain about it, it is your choice. Also sounds a lot like the argument used to stop immigration. 'Dem immigrants took mer job'. 'Dem AI took my animation jerb'. Yeah, no. Also, I'm not just a scientist but also hobbyist artist for 10+ years and an animator. I'm doing my best to make educated points and not say things like 'people like drug bad so people like fast animation bad toooo'
-ABIC- 4 hours ago
@Arooj Basit Malik ok, once again you missed a lot of my arguments and use only the opinions one... [so please this time read the whole things i'm saying] and you added arguments over things that i never said, i will just tell you that it's easy for you all to like anything about these AI and animation and call it a "success" when you are not an animators, and about the heart matter more than brain... i indeed doesn't have as much experience on it than most of the scientist but i can say that always following your heart will not always bring you to a good ending, you can say that to the people using drugs because they feel better, but is it still a good thing? that's why you should follow your brain before your heart, (now we should go back to the original debate:) what do you like about these interpolation made by AI on animation? how do it improve them and most importanly do this have any worth effort at the end? you see what i mean? you are liking this exact same thing which should not give any motivation to the people that did it, even more if they are the people that want to become an animators, and for the people that are watching it, is it a good thing for them to like it? just because it look "better"? even after everything this person in this video and me and many animators said about their flaws and useless use, is it still considering an opinion to you? and it look like you missed most of the point of the video so i suggest to look back to it, to all of it so conclusion: don't try to encourage these useless, pointless, without any art or effort put in it be an inspiration to anyone, AI doesn't have a place in traditionnal 2D animation, there's no reason to like it just because it look "smoother"
Arooj Basit Malik
Arooj Basit Malik 4 hours ago
@-ABIC- I still see the same thing as what I said but instead of the words, I don't like it, words like 'it is useless to like a failed prototype' are being used. That's your opinion. You think it's a failed prototype. You think there is 'some limit to enjoying things'(that does that even mean? You're not allowed to enjoy things because of a few people on the internet decided there is a limit?? Whether you like something or not isn't something someone can control, you know?) Calling someone enjoying something pointless because you believe the technology is pointless is just saying 'I don't like it so you shouldn't' with extra steps. You don't decide what is or isn't a failed prototype. Also as long as even one person in the world in the past or future ever looked at something made to be cool and thought it was cool- that immediately makes it a success because it was made to be cool and someone found it cool? I feel as if you're stuck with the idea that some higher power has decided this is wrong and you agree with it and so everyone who don't agree with it- their non-agreement is pointless and 'doesn't make sense logically'. This is a matter of heart. Not brain. Love and enjoyment not 'this is technically as perfect as it can be so no one touch it.' ^ that mindset is how progression and invention stops. I'm saying that as a scientist.

So seeing someone just put a piece of artwork into a machine and says 'done', I would also be fuming tbh. AI can be cool and makes things easier, yeah but there are some things that humans can do better than an AI. I believe AI can be a helpful assistant, not a full on replacement.

i think kurzgesagt is a great example of good hfr animation at 60fps

I've seen some of those videos but I litterally see no difference, like... what did they change?

13:03 Hi. I'm a Gamer, going from PC MASTER RACE to PS Vita I'm also doing a Game Dev as a hobby. I'm here to inform you that Frame Timing is VERY IMPORTANT! This is why CGI cartoons don't look go unless they are motion captured and that still doesn't feel good. I don't do Animations AT ALL, but I do look at animations in order to see how things should act in code. For instance You, draw a gun shooting and running a LaZerGun and then go and shoot a laser gun in a video game. You know difference.
