Both Mobil 1 and Schaeffer's have been in business for over 100 years, but which brand makes the best SAE 5W-30 full synthetic motor oil? Let's find out! I purchased Mobil 1 and Schaeffer's Synthetic oils using my own money. I am not sponsored by Schaeffer's or Mobil 1 or by any product manufacturer. 100% of Project Farm videos are ideas that come from those leaving comments. So, thank you very much for requesting this video! In the previous episodes, Amsoil won over Royal Purple, Amazon won over Liqui Moli, and Red Line won over Super Tech. The brands that won will advance to next round in the oil championship series.
The testing methods outlined in this video are my own and not performed using expensive oil lab testing equipment or following the ASTM, SAE or API testing standards. The three tests outlined in the video include tests for viscosity at varying temperatures, film strength, and evaporative testing. In my opinion, the testing approaches used in this video provide consumers with valuable information on choosing the right motor oil for their specific application. Hope you enjoy the video and thank you very much for supporting the channel by watching the commercials and through Patreon support. www.patreon.com/projectfarm

The reason why you don't hear of Schaeffer's is because chances are you probably aren't a farmer or a heavy duty equipment mechanic/operator. Most of their stuff is agricultural/heavy duty. So no, they aren't fools because they could care less about advertising your simple 5w30.

Schaeffer's territory reps are wholesalers. The tested oil in this video is less than $8/qt. Company doesn't advertise on purpose. Ad costs are passed along to end users. Company doesn't do that. Sales are made face to face by territory reps. Marketing may splash your product name around but keeping costs down is a company goal.

Years ago I sold Gulf Coast Filters was looking at their web site and saw something about a million mile tear down of a gasoline engine using Shaefers oil. Unusual for gasoline engines. They do mostly tear down inspections of diesel engines on over the road trucks.

Don't know anything about oil. Bought a new Subaru in 84. Brought it home and put Amsoil gear oil in the 5 speed.Put a Frantz oil cleaner on and filled the engine with Mobil 1 15 50 racing oil. I changed the Frantz once a year and added a quart of oil for about 20 years and 250 k. About 12k a year. The oil always looked good. Sent a sample tto a Caterpillar lab. They said it looked good for that many miles but probably should do twice a year. At some point after that both head gaskets started leaking oil. It never needed oil between filter changes. Never drained oil before it started leaking oil. One.cylinder had a little less compression but couldn't tell it when it was running.

Tried Shaeffer's in my own car ONCE. We had an extended cold snap. I thought I had a bad battery as the car had a VERY hard time starting. Installed a new battery. Still VERY hard time starting (very slow turnover with starter). On a whim remembering the only thing I had done different was to try the Shaeffer oil to satisfy a friend who had become a distributor. Changed over to Walmart Syntec amazingly car started just fine with even colder temps. Will never use Shaeffer again. Overpriced IMO and not good overall in my experience

That sounds like a bunch of baloney. Engines need air, fuel and spark to start a combustion process and those 3 things only. Oil is for protection when engine starts running.

Its funny everyone thinks the oil They use is the best. I've had good luck with Mobil 1 . I have also had good luck with Chevron Delo 100 before we had synthetics and multi grade oil was no good for diesels or extended use. The main thing is to keep it Clean.

Synthetic oil is the great "con" of modern motoring. You need the oil that meets the rating specified by the manufacturer anything else is a waste of money.

That is because they got out of beer and into oil...But since I can't find this stuff anywhere I shall stick with mobile 1...The giant controversy seems to be the corporate line on 5W20 versus 5W30, a lot of old school people believe that 5w30 is superior to 5w20(myself included, particularly regarding engine wear versus government mpg cafe standards.. The controversy rolls onward, would really really like to see some sort of comparison regarding these 2 oil viscosity differentials... Great work as always, thanks!!

particularly regarding the effect on variable cam timing maybe? Some claim a delayed advance effect from higher viscosity, however this could be a placebo effect....Maybe take a 3.7 liter ford cyclone and give one a a placebo oil and the other a Cosby roofie...

The best way to keep engine clean is to change your oil every 3,000 miles or when its starts to look dirty. Clean oil is a clean engine. The automakers are going synthetic so that you can go 6,000 miles before a change. I have always bought the cheapest oil all my life and have never had a engine failure. All oil is approved and all have additives per government regulations, there are no garbage oils on the market. www.blackstone-labs.com/oil-viscosity/

For a extra 5 bucks a quart I expect way better performance. Change oil every 20,000 miles is just plain stupid and most people aren’t that dumb, so most smart people will do a oil change with these 2 about twice a year. At an extra 5 bucks a quart times the 5 or 6 quarts you use that’s a extra 50 to 60 bucks a year or another oil change of mobile one. Mobile one has proven over and over that their oil will go the distance and with regular maintenance you will get 250,000-350,000 miles out of your engine or something unrelated to the oil will fail. Why spend 50% more on oil to get the same exact usage out of your engine? If the oil was massively better then fine but it’s only slightly better. Like about .001%. No wonder I’ve never heard of Scheiffer’s, they are over priced oil only idiots buy.

Neither have a drop of synthetic in them, 1999 court case Mobil vs Castrol, Mobil sued Castrol for not having any sythectic in their "Full Synthetic" blends. Castrol won by proving their hydro-cracked (crude gassified, then hydrogen shot thru which removes all impurities and reliquified) oil had same or better friction fighting than synthetic. Court said it was okay, so soon all the big manufacturers followed suit, didn't know Schaffer, which I used to use around 2000, followed in the other's footsteps. Still a good oil, grade 3. To get a 100% synthetic like Amsoil, you have to go to a grade 4 motor oil, Motul is 100% synthetic at this writing, and another I can't remember. All I'm saying is extreme heat, heat saturation (shutting of a hot air cooled motorcycle engine for example) will break these oils down, 100% synthetic will not. Extreme below zero starts (like for a 12 liter diesel) these oils will get thick as opposed to true synthetics. Just wish their labels were truthful.

Of the 14 neurosurgeons and related specialists interviewed by The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age, not one questioned Dr Teo's excellent surgical skills. Instead, the Herald and The Age can reveal they raised serious questions about his judgment, narcissistic behaviour, charging financially-stressed people exorbitant fees when some surgeries could be done for free in a public hospital, blaming others for keeping him from public hospitals when it is Dr Teo himself who has refused to operate in the public system, bad-mouthing his colleagues and inappropriate conduct in the operating theatre. "It's my dream that you would suck my dick while I'm doing this operation. That's a direct quote," said one of his colleagues about Dr Teo's comments to a nurse during a brain surgery operation.

I am not a fanatic so I will just say it's a matter of preference. Having said that, however, the trackpoint offers much more accurate control, with less movement of the hand, without the need to keep your wrist hovering. The main advantage, however is that you keep your hands on the keyboard and can use both the pointing device and the typing device at the same time. Once you get used to it there is no going back. I am in my forties but only got my first Thinkpad 5 years ago (still in my forties then, sadly) and grew to love the trackpoint. I only use the touchpad when I show stuff on my screen to others. My son got his first Thinkpad 4 years ago and is using the Trackpoint exclusively. He's 16 now. You see once you see the benefits there is no going back. His touchpad is disabled, same here. I have an external wireless mouse for other uses (when the laptop is docked) too. Different uses require different pointing device but the trackpoint is the one that gravitates me most.

Schaeffer's 90w oil is amazing stuff. We used it at a shop I worked at. It's the stickiest, slickest stuff I have ever seen. Dip your finger in it and the breeze would make it string across the parking lot. We also put it through the friction test and it performed excellent. It even beat out pumpers lube. Lol. I don't know much about their motor oils though but if its anywhere near as good as their 90w then I'd definitely use it.
