Both Mobil 1 and Schaeffer's have been in business for over 100 years, but which brand makes the best SAE 5W-30 full synthetic motor oil? Let's find out! I purchased Mobil 1 and Schaeffer's Synthetic oils using my own money. I am not sponsored by Schaeffer's or Mobil 1 or by any product manufacturer. 100% of Project Farm videos are ideas that come from those leaving comments. So, thank you very much for requesting this video! In the previous episodes, Amsoil won over Royal Purple, Amazon won over Liqui Moli, and Red Line won over Super Tech. The brands that won will advance to next round in the oil championship series.
The testing methods outlined in this video are my own and not performed using expensive oil lab testing equipment or following the ASTM, SAE or API testing standards. The three tests outlined in the video include tests for viscosity at varying temperatures, film strength, and evaporative testing. In my opinion, the testing approaches used in this video provide consumers with valuable information on choosing the right motor oil for their specific application. Hope you enjoy the video and thank you very much for supporting the channel by watching the commercials and through Patreon support. www.patreon.com/projectfarm

You claim Mobile 1 has been in business for over 100 years, wrong, it was introduced in 1974, if you got that wrong what reason is there to even consider your report as accurate?

Mobil 1 is the number i piece of junk! My company uses it for our vehicles and the oil change and check the next day after run shows the new oil looks only slight different then 30 days before. What a total piece of junk that company choose.

What difference does it make? The worlds fastest man beats the other guy by a minute fraction of a second. He gets a trophy, but beyond that does it matter? Synthetic oil has many properties you are not comparing. For whatever reason, you focus on these two. Could it be because they are the ones you are capable of doing? Quality synthetic oil can protect moving parts so they spec like new after 300,000 miles. Your friction test is misleading. No part can wear like that and be serviceable. Run an engine, for 300,000 miles. Break it down & mic the moving parts. Show us the results. Your silly "test" is misleading. If I rub your face on different brands of sandpaper, regardless, your face is ruined. How does that make brand "A" better? It's a stupid parameter for measuring.

I use nothing but Mobil 1 oil. I think it's a really fine oil. I have a 2011 Ford f250 4X4 6.7l diesel pick up with 100,000 miles and I had to take the lower oil pan off because of a small leak. When I took it off the inside of my engine looked BRAND NEW. No build up no gum no grime,I mean it was really clean and I attribute that to the oil that I'm using. I do a oil change when my truck tells me to and on average that'll be anywhere from 6800-7200 miles. Mobil 1 oil is absolutely fantastic. If they made a cooking oil it'll probably be great too, ha ha.

It seems like the viscosity of the Schaeffers is just a little bit less (i.e. flows a little faster, evaporates a bit faster).

Mobil 1 was tested in it's early days against Valvoline at Lubrizol. Mobil 1 was sheared to 36,000 mile condition. then it was tested against brand new Valvoline. Mobil 1 was better in every test. I am sure Schaffer's is good oil, but the difference you display is not worth the extra cost. I get Mobil 1 at BJ's Wholesale for 36 dollars regular price for 6 quarts and they have 10 dollars off regularly. You should include a factor of cost benefit per percentage of test results. is a 2% better flow worth double the cost? In your wear test you should use new steel for BOTH parts and weigh both.

I do all my own car maintenance including changing the oil every 10K miles on my Toyota Prius which is recommended in the owners manual using full synthetic oil. I monitor the maintenance schedule and fuel economy performance of my car using software www.automotivewolf.com on my computer. I use only OEM Toyota oil and filters so I would love to see a comparison of some of the OEM oils which are recommended by the manufacturer. Toyota claims their oils are specifically designed for their vehicles. I have over 200K miles on my car and its never needed any repairs other than replacing the brake pads. I think just keeping up with the maintenance schedule is the key factor in extending the life of any engine.

@THIS IS #MAGA COUNTRY so you are saying oil change is @ 10k miles? in my country the mechanics demand you change oil @ 2k miles or else your car will break... so we do that oil change obediently in fear of motor failure on the road
THIS IS #MAGA COUNTRY
About $23 for a 5qt jug or $26 for Extended 15K Mileage Mobil 1. I use the Extended with a top quality filter and change it at 10K. 2014 Camry SE has 105K miles and is still oil tight and runs right.

You do impressive, comprehensive testing on a large number of products. One thing that always concerned me however, was the bearing wear test; specifically, the amount of lubricant that's provided in the plastic cups. Often, it appears the oil level in the cups are not at a precise, consistent level between the comparative products which could therefore influence the test results?
417Shagnasty

There is another test that I think needs to be done on these oils. When liquids, even water, are forced through a .001 thousandths of an inch crack under pressure, tests have shown that even water will develop the viscosity of something close to molasses when under the same pressure as an automotive engine oil pump delivers when forced through a .001 inch crack. I would be more interesting to see how these oils preform under more actual properties of a running engine and not just the heat and cold. The .001 to.0015 would be closer to what most bearing journal tolerances are in an actual modern overhead cam engine.

Here's a question: what happens to the additives, assuming you're topping up due to evaporative loss and what effect does that have on the oils effectiveness over the life cycle of the oil?

If you cycled your tests a thousand times to simulate real world conditions what do you thing the results would be?

it's not so much which oil has the lowest viscosity, it's which oil maintains its stated viscosity. I'd like to see a modified film test where you see how much of a friction load the oil can handle while maintaining a oil film so there is zero wear on the bearing (the oil is doing it's job of keeping the metal parts from touching)... perhaps by watching current on a watts meter, finding the point where current jumps at the point where too much friction causes metal to metal contact
