I just bought the new 2019 Tesla Model 3 - here’s why it was only $78.39 per month. Enjoy! Add me on Instagram: GPStephan

So how does a $40,000 car come down to a price of $29,450?
To start, this car is eligible for a $3750 federal tax credit until June 30th, 2019. This means if you pay more than $3750 in federal taxes, you will receive this entire amount back at the time you file your tax return. That money is as good as cash.
California drivers are also eligible for a $2500 Electric Vehicle Rebate, in which the state will mail you a check for $2500 upon showing proof of purchase.
Now Tesla gets a little sneaky after this…because in that $29,450 figure, Tesla also

So excluding the gas savings and only focusing on the first two, cash-value rebates, the ACTUAL price of the car comes to $33,750. For a brand new Tesla. Standard Range Plus. With AutoPilot.
So here’s how I bought this car for $78.39 per month:
Because I financed 100% of the car, my ONLY out of pocket cost was the taxes, license, and registration - which came to $4437.01
From the remaining amount I financed, my payment comes to $640 per month, or $7680 in the first year.
That means, in the first year, my total out of pocket cost is $12,117.01 between my payments, taxes, insurance, etc.
However, after the rebates and tax credits, that brings my TOTAL cost of owning this car for the first year down to $5867.01.
Because this car is for business use, the $1438 I pay in interest on the auto loan is a tax write off, the $4437 in taxes, licensing, and registration I paid upfront is a write off, and I can depreciate the car against my income. That’s a $14,075 tax write off…which saves me roughly about $4,926.25 in taxes.
So remember…my total out of pocket cost was $5867.01 after electric vehicle tax incentives. PLUS I save $4926.25 in taxes…that means I’m effectively buying a BRAND new Tesla Model 3 for $78.39 per month out of pocket…and realistically, this works out to be a FREE car when you take into account that MOST of that $640 per month loan payment goes towards principle, and that I can invest my money in real estate at a significantly higher return than what I’m paying in interest on the Tesla. But in terms of out of pocket cost: $78.39 per month.
And after going through the experience buying a Tesla like this, completely sight unseen, without ever having driven one before, I have to say…I don’t understand the concern of Tesla’s no-dealership model. Personally, I think the entire worry is overblown - and I think we’ll start to see a lot MORE car companies embracing this online-only business model.
We’re naturally entering an era where everything is done online. I haven’t been to a mall or physical store in FOREVER because it’s more convenient to buy it online, and USUALLY for a more competitive price because online stores have lower overhead, and that savings is passed down to the customer.
And for that, I have to give Tesla credit for being the first to really challenge the traditional business model of selling cars.

I work and save money so I can get any car for 78.00 a month because I don't put 10% down; I also don't sell vehicles every few years so the age old argument of "You're wasting money" doesn't apply. Save your damn cash. Get a daily and save your cash. Get the car you want because you saved for it. Or pay stupid high prices, I mean banks love people like that, they hate people like me because they don't make interest off me, I just out right buy it. Got one of those liberal arts degrees? Sucks to be you.

This is what you call wishful thinking haha! No matter what number you calculate that you pay in your head, the bank still takes out 600+ per month for the next 72 months. This is why I don’t window shop, because I’m an impulse buyer. But I admit it

You say you can write off the tax since you use it for official business purposes. The you show up at your dad and you hear him say, "is this for me?". Nice present, but clearly not a "business car"
garfieldt
garfieldt 21 hour ago
+Graham Stephan yes, i realize. But gifting it away doesn't constitute continued business purpose usage. The regulation might be different in the US, in that case, I am clearly wrong.

Just for everyones info. For a small chump making under 40K a year in a small southern shithole state who USUALLY gets back a small refund, the 7500 or 3500 tax credit is nothing, it's not even to be considered "savings" for you, it's not a refundable credit. It would just reduce your tax liability IF you OWE taxes. Hope this helps.

Sorry, but that is not a good interest rate. My wife car is finance at 2.9%, financed in December 2016. I know for a fact you have a better credit rating than myself and likely a lower debt-to-income ratio as well. There are car advertisements on broadcast television today in May 2019 for 0.9% APR. Granted, that is for extremely well qualified buyers on a one year term, but still, that rate is being advertised. I suppose you are writing off the interest anyway, so who cares?

After year 1 the out of pocket cost goes way up because all of the federal credits were used to make his payments seem small. The new 2018 tax code lowers the amount of write offs for businesses, this video is obsolete.

I believe your company bought the car, not you ,since you mentioned all the tax write offs. You use the car, but the car is company owned. I am not sure, how this works in the US, but in EU countries, the company owns the car and thats why it's cheaper. You get all these tax write offs which regular people don't get. It seems you didn't buy the car for $78/month, your company did.
ElectricBuckeye
“I haven’t been to a physical store in ages.” Apparently you’ve never done any work in your home (plumbing, electrical, painting, flooring, etc.).
ElectricBuckeye
Graham Stephan, which doesn’t work well in practice when applied to what I’ve given as examples. Why would you waste the time to order a 3-way switch or a 1/2” ball valve when you could just run down to the hardware store and pick one up to finish your task that day? Absolutely inefficient.
Graham Stephan

That math tho 🤣😂😂 Many years ago I swore off buying a new car. For me paying for it for five years is excruciating. By the time it's paid up, it's old and I am ready to move on. On the other hand, the tribulations of used cars are unbearable too. So I prefer to eat my cake and have it too. Lease a new car without paying the new car price. After 24 months, drive it back and get the next new car. Perpetually driving a new car without ever paying sticker. Without ever being stuck with one just coz I spent a fortune on it. Thankfully I don't have attachment issues so ownership is actually a bother. That's just me.

+Graham Stephan All working adults are aware of tax write offs...that is not the issue (your condescending tone is duly noted, btw). The issue is the the title/thumbnail "The $78 Tesla"....Should be "how tax credits got me a $78/mo Tesla" or something even more specific. With an accurate title I never would have clicked on this video. Instead, an accurate title would allow viewers interested in thoeretical ways to buy an electric car cheaply to click. In short, those ACTUALLY INTERESTED in the video. Most are not buying Teslas for business needs, many states don't offer checks for electric car purchases, etc. Judging by the thousands of dislikes, I am not the only one that feels this is misleading or a waste of most of your viewer's time. Click bait refers to putting a misleading title to get unsuspecting viewers to watch your video. "It's how clickbait works."

Biggest problem financially for this strategy: it’s smart but at the depreciation rate in the later years of the loan depreciation will be a lot less, and the loan interest, since principal has been paid down, is also less. These both means less write off on the llc and less savings.
