First Video of NASA’s Ingenuity Mars Helicopter in Flight, Includes Takeoff and Landing (High-Res)

NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory

In this video captured by NASA’s Perseverance rover, the agency's Ingenuity Mars Helicopter took the first powered, controlled flight on another planet on April 19, 2021.
The rover was parked at “Van Zyl Overlook,” about 211 feet (64.3 meters) away in Mars' Jezero Crater and chronicled the flight operations with its cameras.
These images from the rover’s Mastcam-Z cameras show the helicopter hovering above the Red Planet's surface. During this first flight, the helicopter climbed to an altitude of 10 feet (3 meters), hovered, and then touched back down on the surface of Mars.

Ingenuity is a technology demonstration. The 4-pound (1.8-kilogram) rotorcraft will help determine whether future explorations on Mars could include an aerial perspective.
Perseverance touched down at "Octavia E. Butler Landing" with Ingenuity attached to its belly on Feb. 18, 2021. The helicopter was deployed to the surface on April 3.
For more information on Ingenuity, visit : mars.nasa.gov/technology/helicopter/.

I have a strong big Drone myself similar to that one. I get suspicious now. For many reasons. What NASA claims that very light wind on Mars can cause alot of dust. Now that drones propellers can cause some serious dust and yet I don't se ANY dust blowing from underneath even though there's dust beneath. My Drone in clean wet garden Sweden makes alot of things to fly... Even heavy, leaves, papers even plastic fork. Wtf is this now?

If Nasa ever do find any kind of lifeform so they have the permission of the world's population (a) to intefere with another planets life cycle and (b) bring it back here to earth? Or will NASA not care a toss and do waht it like either in full view of the watching billions or in secret?

@Stinkeye Jones Now we all know you're an idiot. Here's the quote from NASA: mars.nasa.gov/technology/helicopter/#Tech-Specs It clearly states "Total length of rotors: ~4 feet (~1.2 meters) tip to tip". So it is a diameter, NOT a single rotor blade length. Questions?

@Wolfgang Mahringer Really? You're quoting from wiki, whereas I am quoting direct from mission specialists. Go home, do your homework again.

@Stinkeye Jones The 4 feet is the diameter, so one blade is 2 feet long. See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ingenuity_(helicopter)

@David Gregory -thanks for taking a stab at enlightening me. That’s a huge accomplishment indeed. But as this technology has shown us, it will be robots controlled by artificial intelligence who’ll be the real sojourners of space exploration. We don’t need to send humans out there to collect rocks and measure atmospheric data. Since posting my question, I’ve been to NASA’s website and took an interest in Jupiter. What a mysterious planet! I’ve learned that 1,300 Earths could fit inside of Jupiter. And despite that anecdotal data that suggests it’s a Gas Giant, scientists are still uncertain about Jupiter’s core. I wish I could be alive 100 years from now just to see the secrets of Jupiter revealed. Anyhoo, I’m babbling again so laterz....
David Gregory
David Gregory 18 days ago
Do you not read any news at all? Already Perseverance has successfully harvested oxygen from the Martian CO2 based atmosphere, and demonstrated that a self-sufficient human expedition to Mars is possible. As usual, the offshoot of this of course, is that the technology for producing O2 from CO2 in small, power efficient machines moves forward, which has many applications here on earth. Do you not think that how this device is actually powered is of no significance for solving a whole bunch of electric vehicle issues we're having here on earth? ..oh... and of course.... do you not think for one second that working out how to get a helicopter to fly in an environment with such little atmosphere has no real world application to rotor blade design for regular helicopters making them more efficient, quieter and more effective? Space exploration is a series of solving problems, and more often than not, solving those problems opens up access to technologies that have manifold real world applications that not only make YOUR life better, but actually save lives too. You're an idiot for even asking this question. I was going to link you to a list of things that have enriched and improved lives here on earth as a result of space exploration, but it wouldn't actually be difficult for you to go and find out yourself. Maybe you'll get a liking for actually researching things instead of waiting to be spoon-fed information.
