Bender (Judd Nelson) challenges Mr. Vernon's (Paul Gleason) authority and receives months of detention in return.
John Hughes wrote and directed this quintessential 1980s high school drama featuring the hottest young stars of the decade. Trapped in a day-long Saturday detention in a prison-like school library are Claire, the princess (Molly Ringwald); Andrew, the jock (Emilio Estevez); John, the criminal (Judd Nelson); Brian, the brain (Anthony Michael Hall); and Allison, the basket case (Ally Sheedy). These five strangers begin the day with nothing in common, each bound to his/her place in the high school caste system. Yet the students bond together when faced with the villainous principal (Paul Gleason), and they realize that they have more in common than they may think, including a contempt for adult society. "When you grow up, your heart dies," Allison proclaims in one of the film's many scenes of soul-searching, and, judging from the adults depicted in the film, the teen audience may very well agree. Released in a decade overflowing with derivative teen films, The Breakfast Club has developed an almost cult-like status.

if I were Bender, I would punch Vernon in the face and leave school before he could expel me, teachers like him deserve to be punched in the face and fired, they can't talk to students or treat students like that, it cannot be their job cause that's bullsh*t

The best part is when the principal leaves the library he sighs, showing how he doesn’t enjoy these punishments either. I think it’s a cool way to humanize him and show that he’s just like every other teacher.

“Instead of going to prison you’ll come here” Prison could be alluding to his home. This is why I think he continues adding on the detentions. His abusive home life might be too much for him, so detention is a way to escape, and get his anger out of his system by pestering the other attendees of the session. This film has so much to do with the characters life outside of school and almost everything they do can be referencing a way of their life.

Principal Vernon: “You ought to spend a little more time trying to make something of yourself and a little less time trying to impress people.” Boy in Police Station "You ought to spend a little more time dealing with yourself ... a little less time worrying about what your brother does." Maybe Charlie Sheen's character spent time in detention?

They forgot to add the end of this scene, when Bender drops one of the most powerful f bombs in cinematic history. Also, I found it funny that the commercial TV edit of the line remained “eat my socks” even after Bart Simpson made it a catchphrase.

One has to wonder if "eat my shorts" was Bender trying to stick up for the way Vernon treated Andrew just then and then it all exploded. So he does have some decency in him at the time. He went too far and you can't really blame him for acting out as already mentioned. But i wonder why Claire never got yelled at or another week for telling him to cut it out? That takes guts when the situation is already tense.

This principal cracks me up. When he realizes the firecode situation he starts blaming Andrew 😂. He calls these kids names when they act up 😂. In today's society he'd be fired and sent to prison for that.
