If you look closely at the car at 0:33, you can tell it isn't moving at all. I guess that Hughes must have told the developers to give the driver a sign as to when to move.

John Hughes is one of those rare people out of Hollywood that really captured the essence of the coming of age genre. He didn't make films about getting laid, most if not all of his films delve into deep interpersonal connections with other humans. Planes Trains and Automobiles is a fantastic film about communicating and relating with people different than yourself. If you haven't seen it, check it out. Steve Martin and John Candy should have earned best actor Oscars, but Oscars tend to favour intense dramatic, epic films.

There was a very good analysis about this scene that on Monday, they each will go back to their separate lives, their individual cliques. Their circumstances are too difficult to change. But for this one day in their lives, they shared this one moment with each other. And this scene is goodbye, each of them understood that what they shared during this one fateful day in detention will forever be engraved in their hearts and minds. That in a parallel universe, a princess, a jock, a criminal, a weirdo, a nerd shared something unforgettable, together.

If Hollywood remade this today, Bender would be black Brian would be Asian Andrew would be gay Allison would be trans Claire and Mr. Vernon would just be the same.

None of them have any respect for their parents (rightly so as they all seem like assholes) so I think they’re past trying to please them, impress them or change themselves to be what their parents want them to be. They can finally be themselves as they found acceptance in each other. That’s all they really wanted in the first place.

Nothing's inspirational about this movie. Four white kids first yelled at each other, threatened each other, got high, sat down in a circle, talked about how shitty their parents are and then made out in the end. Nonetheless, it was an entertaining movie. The girls were really cute. And the sexual tension between Claire and Bender could be easily cut with his knife.

My prediction after this Saturday, nobody stays together. Andy cheats on Allison and she commits suicide. Bender and Claire have a violent on off relationship that ends with her leaving the state and Bender goes to jail for reasons speculated throughout town. Brian goes to college getting masters in three degrees and has his essay hanging at home or in his office but is single and will probably remain so for a long time. They spent one day together mostly with very aggressive behavior and destructive. The odds weren’t in their favor.

Why did you ever half to fuck with me? I gave you everything I have and you took it all. Polluted it and made billions off my skin. I have crumbs on my table and I dine with snakes. Your deeds glow brightly so be sure of your fate. You were given time but scoffed. Enjoy your spoils as that is what they and you shall do

Most people are feeling sorry for Brian because he didn't get a romance in the end. The way I see it, he was the voice for all of them. Instead of an essay, he wrote a masterpiece which still rings true to this day.

I would like to believe Brian Johnson floated around until his mid-twenties. He then took out a loan on a convenience store, flopped, bought into a few other store investments, flopped, wound up bankrupt, took the money he saved in tin cans and went into day-trading stocks and build a rather comfortable nest-egg. He started a grant that allowed kids who make "C-" or less get into college - if they graduate, they would give .001% of their earnings, annually, toward the grant. He graduated 13,692 students with that "Low-grade" scholarship - four of which was offered Ph.D. courses in three different Ivy League Universities. With Andrew Clark: I would like to think he wound up bumming for several years whereas he found a knack in fishing -- which lead him to a very lucrative retirement in Tournament Fishing. John Bender became a prepper. I would like to think he found himself in the wilderness dodging Park Rangers for most of his life to illegally live in Yellow Stone and the Grand Tetons when he met different people from all over the World who invited (and paid his expenses for) him to teach them extremist survival skills in their Country's Wilderness. Because he didn't spend too much on houses, cars, marriage and other of life's liabilities, he retired in sweet comfort on the edge of his beloved Grand Teton National Park -- literally...his property line IS SHARED with the Grand Tetons...he will probably be found illegally camping 35 feet into the forest when his time comes. Allison Reynolds unimaginatively got a job at a local factory. She saved a co-workers life by placing a tourniquet around the squashed arm trapped in a press and was esteemed. She worked her way up to management, became good at seeing plans that other's couldn't and wound up buying (and expanding) her manufacturing business. Claire Standish relied on her cutesy/bitchy persona. Got hitched to a semi-well-off dude and had several children and a few tickets (with her husband) for lewd and mischievous conduct (she likes to get banged in the woods - sort of like John). Because she relied on her cutesy persona, she was not well-liked by her co-workers and went through many jobs whereas she found she was very good at Home-medical-transcription, began a private organization that offered beds to homeless and convicts who could match her skill and retired with just enough to allow her & her's to travel for the rest of her life. All five, in their hearts, knew they would not have been the people they became if it were not for that one day where the lines were blurred, friendships made, expectations challenged, hurtles jumped, and consequences faced with an impromptu band of unlikely teenagers. This is what I would like to think.
