Who really picks our presidential nominees? Sure, most Americans have the chance to go to the polls and vote for their favorite candidate in a primary or caucus. But when it comes down to it, are party elites really pulling the strings?
In this episode of The Primaries Project, we look at historical elections to see who's really in control of our primary system: the parties or the people.

Yay, more FiveThirtyEight vids about historical developments! I think you guys are now my favorite outfit to follow for political coverage here in the States. Always loved the podcast, and now I’m falling in love with the channel and site too.

yea hell about 3 million more people voted for Hillary than Trump. Bush Jr was president because of the government/military/Electoral college not the people same as trump. 2 of the last 3 presidents has been chosen by the government not the people.

Democrats, let the people play a large role this time the way that they played a great role for Trump. Even if it’s for Sanders or Yang, let the people decide. Joe Biden is toxic and becoming more beatable.

Yes! We probably should have added a section on it. I was concerned that the video was getting long, but in retrospect, that was probably the wrong call. A lot of the same factors that allowed Howard Dean to gain success in 2004 also propelled Bernie ahead in the 2016 primary. At some point, perhaps we should do a whole video on Bernie and the Democratic Party. -- Anna

2016 was a great example, but you barely scraped the surface. Would’ve been nice to point out how BOTH parties did their best to pick their respective ‘winners’ - the undemocratic process by the Democratic party basically undermined the entire primary for those on the left. Where the Republicans, despite their infighting and insistence that DJT couldn’t win, ultimately succumbed to the will of the voters....likely hoping to alter their primary process after the election and using, what they expected to be, a lopsided loss for them to justify it. fivethirtyeight.com/features/donald-trump-would-be-easy-to-stop-under-democratic-rules/ Parties should not have the power to erase and overturn the will of the people.
