Part 1 - Building an £850 hatchback into a competitive race car.

The global pandemic scuppered our carefully laid plans for the spring and summer of 2020 so we needed something else to pass the time and to look forward to. Enter the City Car Cup...
Launched in June 2020, the new series from the BRSCC is open to the Citroen C1, Toyota Aygo and Peugeot 107 and captured our imagination instantly so we leapt upon the chance to whip out the grinder and set about finding a car to cut up.
This new series will detail the build, preparation, testing, racing and development of the car. In a frankly unbelievable twist, the car is already finished and has been raced, so we're back on the other projects while this series airs.

2020 has been full of the strangest happenings, not least among them is that we've actually finished a project. This one is done and dusted for the most part and we're already back on the other two after an enforced hiatus. Apologies for the delay in bringing you our normal shows, but it was out of our control. Hope you enjoy this in the meantime and don't worry, more Binky and Escargot is coming your way soon.

Hey guys! Next time you take a window winder off use a rag around the back of the winder and work it into the clip to pop it out, it's alot easier than a screwdriver!

@Robot Munkee Intersting observations. Not saying you are necessarily wrong, but a friend had had a Dodge Challenger with a 440 and a Holley 6pack that was the only car I ever wanted to slow down in. I would like the opportunity to revisit the vehicle, decades of driving later, this time with modern brakes and cop type sway bars front and rear, adjustable 4 link rear suspension. Pass everything except a gas station. Depending on rear end ratio. 9 inch Ford third member in back ? I suppose it depends on experience level. Used to hang out with guys that spent a lot of time racing, weekends. Their ideas as to what was nice to drive were very different from most. One friend had a Rickman Honda, another had a Rickman Triumph Trident. The two bikes handling were completely different. The Triumph cornered like a witch. The Honda was a genuine 140 mph plus vehicle. Ah well. Pick something you like and stick with it.

Hate to break it to you guys, but all that expensive Sim Racing is not what you need to be competitive. Nice excuse though for making an awesome racing car. You should try to make a 24hoursoflemons car sometime and bring it stateside!

why would you add weight with the door panels, footrests and dashboard when the point of a race car is to be as light, fast and nimble as possible

Just found your channel recently, and really enjoy your work. You might say, I'm a fan of your work. The incredible fabrication and sheer lack of fear has really inspired me in my own affordable Motorsport effort, which I think may even compete with this project for cheap and enjoyable. Racing Lawnmowers. Many clubs in the UK, with a rule book 100mm thick, to more relaxed rules with just one sheet of A4. very accessible, and very cheap. often folks will give away their old ride on mowers! I have plans for converting my 7.5T removal van into a similar accomodation-come-transport truck for my Racing Lawnmower(s), so look forward to seeing the progress there!

Even for a cheap racing series, I think the total build cost would come to about 10k (including the car, parts & labour) if built by a race team.

I sure wish I seen the idea of Locktite on rivnuts, all those years ago. Tried everything else to keep those blasted things from rotating. That was our bright idea,a guy we knew owned a TR4 A that had been messed with,Whitworth mixed with God knows what. You could hear the fenders rattle from a block away. That one little comment alone made it worthwhile watching. Thanks for that.

Citroen C1 is a surprisingly reliable car but the clutch is shite, my ex gf had one and after 35 thousand miles it needed a new clutch, contrast that with my current car a 2007 Mitsubishi Colt which has done 107 thousand on original clutch and yeah, French need to catch up the Japanese fast

good luck keeping the budget low... even with you guys' expertise, haha. for €1500 you can simrace enjoyably, and with *your skill* as the limiting factor, for years. You could even get away with spending less than the cost of your car, if you're willing to buy a few bits used. And all of this is still including the PC and monitor/VR as well.
