Tag along to the breathtaking countryside in Wales for a behind the scenes visit with interior and textile designer Penny Morrison at her beautiful 18th century country home. Originally built in 1790 with an addition thirty years later, the house hadn’t been touched since 1910 when Penny and her art dealer husband Guy purchased the property. After an 18 month renovation, Penny decorated the house and has continued to update it with her signature spin of chic eclectic color and pattern. Mixing classic English chintzes with Indian, Moroccan and Turkish textiles and rugs as well as her own fabrics, she has created a fearless and yet sublimely comfortable home. With all the main floor rooms having access to the terraces and gardens, it is a house celebrating nature year round. Hear what Penny considers a well decorated room and learn her tips for living with art and how embracing your own style will make your rooms sing. You’ll be inspired, informed and entertained!! This isn't my style at all but I absolutely love it. With a wave of her hand she generously suggests you just buy any old thing that takes your fancy and find a place to stick it when you get back but, of course, she is extremely brilliantly talented to make this work so superbly. You cannot see it's been designed, but it's actually meticulous. It's a real home, not a showpiece and it's incredibly inviting, happy and welcoming. If you didn't get it already, the guestbook at the end tells you this is the home of warm thoughtful generous people who love other people.

I live in England now in a small terrace house built in the late 1800's. Even if our space is small, the enduring charm of the English country look suits our space so well. It is a look that will never go out of style.

Colour and richness. You never, ever can go wrong with colour and richness. I've been saying that for years and I'll say it til I draw my last breath. All this white, open concept and minimalism is so, so, SOOOOO, overdone now, and dear, sweet, god, it needs to go soon. It's as boring, unimaginative, cold and uninviting as all hell. While I might not decorate my place exactly as this lady has, I appreciate the fact that she appreciates the importance of colour and richness in our lives. I don't mean colour in your fabrics alone, but colour for rooms as well, as in painting schemes, which was always, normal and accepted until the past 20 odd, years or so. And when I say richness; I mean richness in the things you surround yourself with. Because one chooses to avoid the minimalistic look that seems to be all the rage today, does not mean they need to have their place cluttered to the point it becomes difficult to move around, no. It's all, in the art of "placement." I notice this lady still, has a fair amount of white in her place, and because I've become so thoroughly poisoned with this non-colour now, I would not have it anywhere, if it were me, myself, save the ceilings maybe, and splashes of it on trim, here and there. I love her prints, I love her shades of blues, greens and yellows and so forth, and hope to goodness, this catches on and becomes the norm, again. My Retro/Vintage Best. Out.

@Ann Olsen : Hi Ann. Thanks Darling. I believe I replied to one of your comments, already. Do hope RUvid did not delete it on me. My hatred and bitterness toward this all white and open concept nonsense goes beyond words actually, because it's so, completely, taken over and I feel it's being shoved in my face continually. If you don't follow suit then you are considered "dated" and behind the times, when actually, I feel I have better taste than most of this garbage I see in most of these videos and home renovation shows - which I never watch - on TV, and simply, don't want and refuse to change. I love my colour and richness, and I love actual, rooms in a darn place. I like the change of scenery actual, rooms provide a person, while still, living in the same place. Plus, the warmth, coziness and privacy they provide, as well. These things all, have great, merit, as well and were universally, accepted forever, until the past 20 odd, years or so. I've said it before Darling and will continue to say it; white makes a great accent colour for ceilings and trim and so forth, but THAT IS IT! Suppose nature were to follow suit with a drab, dead, dry, boring design concepts of today. Imagine going through a world that is ALL WHITE! It does not bare thinking, does it? Humans NEED, colour and we NEED, richness in our lives, to make us happy and enrich our lives that much more. And if that makes me "old school" then I wear that label proudly and will never change. I hate white, anything, Darling, unless it's some little vase or figurine or something of that nature. Slight splashes of white here and there, but that's about it. My Retro/Vintage Best. Best of 2020. Out.

@Quintessence : You're welcome My Dear. I've left comments to a couple of your other videos too, but I guess, you haven't gotten around to seeing them yet. I take a slightly, different stance than yourself, in that I absolutely, hate all white and open concept with a bitter passion and am on a bit of a crusade to try to get people to think differently about how they decorate the interior of their spaces. I rent as well. I'll never be able to afford the rich, lavish, homes you feature in your videos, and because I rent, I'm always, concerned that this fanatical, and I have to say, uninspired, obsession with white, will be forced on me eventually, as well, until we get to the point where we are seeing alternatives to this, go mainstream, again. I'm still, struggling to understand how we got to this place, to begin with. With pretty much, everything with pop culture today. I honestly, can't get my head around it, and it seems as alien as anything to me. I've been watching videos lately, of people who like to decorate with plants. BRAVO! Never can have too much greenery around you, plus it's healthy too, so we are told. Whatever happened to that trend? I'm overjoyed that there are those out there, trying to keep that interior design concept alive, as well. Maybe it might not be such a bad idea to post a few videos focused on this. I'm stoked beyond words, with what Timothy wishes to do with his Chateau. He's definitely, a man after my own heart, and I would dearly, love to chat with him sometime, about his design concepts, as they mirror my own, almost to a T. God, I hope that his ideas and those of people like him, go mainstream soon, as personally, I'm all white and open concepted, completely, to death here. I honestly, do believe it's time for a change now, and we need to find some way to make that change appealing, so everyone will want it. Right? My Retro/Vintage Best. Best of 2020. Out.

I agree. I am so against white. Besides it is so dreadfully impractical. However, I do collect and have beautiful white linens. If it's white, and I cannot bleach it or easily throw it in the wash I don't want it. I almost have a prejudice against people who have white couches etc. I bet you agree. My instagram is sigridannolsen and you'll see that I am not a "white couch" person.

To me, all the treasures in Penny's home represent a map of her life. I love that she surrounds herself with things that bring her joy and validate a life worth living. What impresses me is after having had a tour of her home, I am left with an impression of who actually lives there. I find nowadays, so many people's places all look the same and with what I would call, cookie cutter decorating. Who wants to live in a home where everything matches and looks like it was all purchased on the same day at the same store--including the book jacket on the coffee table. No thanks! You have a lovely home, Penny, and certainly one that is loved. Best regards, Darryl
