I don't think the white haired woman was meaning to be rude. I can understand that it would be ideal to have someone to help him out if he's deaf. She did say the waiter was rude, I honestly believe she tried to mean well, but being an older person she came off as a bit pushy.

I have had only one experience with a deaf customer. It was when I worked at subway. This mild aged women wrote on a note telling me she was deaf and I smiled at her and held up the different breads for her to point at one and I took my time to make sure I understood what exactly she wanted. Sure I had 4 or 5 more customers after her but I didn’t care. She deserved the same service and same great sub.

I can appreciate the attempt, the premise of the show, but yet I can't help but think I'd be royally p!ssed off by being emotionally manipulated by a TV crew for viewers...if I was fired up over one of these setups, and then found out it was staged, I'd punch John Quinones right in the f#cking face. I'm sympathetic with the various scenarios in a theoretical sense, but when I see the good people who respond in tears after a fake scenario they don't know was staged, it just rubs me the wrong way....no thanks

This actually happened to me before. A man came into my work place and he couldn’t speak but he could hear. I automatically understood that he needed pen and paper to communicate and I made sure everyone was patient with him. I know they’re just actors but it really hurts to see people being hurt, and it’s sad that it happens all the time

I cried my ass off. I dated a deaf guy for 5 months and I learned sign language with him, before that I always thought it wasn't gonna be useful for me at all but today I understand a little of what they go through and I know how happy they are when they're a customer and the waiter or whoever it is can speak their language and help them.

Two things: first, totally keeping in mind he’s an actor trained to do this, it’s still hilarious watching the waiter take all of this “abuse”. Second, the “mushroom hair” lady pissed me off. She came off as so hypocritical to me. As someone who has lots of deaf friends I can personally say even the deaf community has stated we don’t need to feel sorry for them and that they are NOT invalids! Her giving him a pen and telling him he needs it and to “be prepared” would be considered insulting. It implies he needs help or aide. He was perfectly capable of handling himself. He arrived at the restaurant by himself. He walked into the restaurant by himself. He could order by himself. He could pay for his meal by himself. He has a lot of ways of communicating. Deaf people are perfectly PREPARED to handle themselves in society, lady!

@onebuffchick oohh I get where you're coming from, sorry of I sounded aggressive btw, I think that she did try to help, but maybe she didnt do it in the best way possible
onebuffchick Day ago
Sorry I guess I should have been more specific. I totally agree that she wasn’t trying to be rude and she felt that was the only way to help. My point was trying to say it was the assumption that he needed the help and that he should be prepared. I have a friend who was in a similar scenario and he got upset when someone told him to carry around pen and paper all the time because he feels he doesn’t need to. It’s a tricky line.

She was trying to help without being rude to the waiter or the customer. A pen and paper was all she could do to help and she provided it, he didnt have to even use the pen he could of just chucked it

im sorry for saying this but being deaf is like being a foreigner who can not speak english and communicate ,you need to adapt not expect others to figure out how to communicate with you or learn sign language..i have friend who has deaf child and first thing she did was making sure that her child knows to communicate and read lips and how to speak, they can speak ,yes the waiter was disgusting jerk but i believe that is that deaf person should know how to communicate ,type on the phone, electronic translator or even have paper and pen and write im deaf can i place my order...i think the worst thing is when parents just make sure that their kids know the sign language and nothing else..this will limit their opportunities and make them isolated
