Parachute payment already make Premier League practically a closed league. Team drop down with double cash than avarage Championship budget

It's all come about because player wages are out of control. Can Barca afford Messi? NO.

I think it's possible to add more tournaments into the mix they don't necessarily need to replace existing leagues.

Whom could it finish they're carrier in smaller team's in others countries to give a little valence to football soccer. But that's something the they're don't like to talk about it.

It seems this crazy Super League is only attractive to those that have never been to sport, i.e. Americans. In America there is NO sport. America has businesses that employ sports people to play the sports to entertain. It is sooooo different, to discuss football, I would honestly suggest Americans say nothing.

@David Tran sorry. America has sport entertainment businesses, but no sport.

People that say the World Cup is the zenith of football are the same that fight over Messi and Ronaldo in the comments. The ESL would have been phenomenal. Players that don't feature for their national teams like Benzema , Lacazette, Ozil, etc. could feature in the same arena as players that do not have the support at the international level to win the World Cup (Messi, Ronaldo). Execution was poor. Idea was good.

@dr kay I am French. I just went to boarding school in the United States. I never said to get rid of the competitive structure. The ESL isn't supposed to replace the local league structure! It is supposed to be an alternative to the Champions League. Whoever you support and the rest of the shitty teams of Europe can continue to play in a competitive continental league amongst each other. As for the elite players however the path is clear: play your league football in the UK, Spain, or Germany (or one of the big teams in France or Italy) and play competitive fixtures against other players who are in those leagues or play at the level of those leagues. If a team from the Russian Super League wants to prove its mettle against Barcelona then they can do what Barcelona did and win a tremendous amount of national and international club competitions until it builds a big enough name for itself. It sounds mean but it actually will create more footballing opportunities as clubs form their own ESL adjacent leagues which will ultimately merge into a larger league. Look up the history of American sports leagues; almost all of them began as several smaller leagues that end up melting into one continental league after a couple decades. None of the meritocratic aspects of the game are lost. The only difference under this system is a small team isn't guaranteed competition against a big team -- and honestly most people are fine with that they are just complaining because the ESL presentation was terribly timed.

@House of Venus you believe a closed franchise system is the best because youve been brought up with it. From a neutral point of view you might think different. Competition is supposed to be based on merit. I've been to soo many American sports games and as an outsider just did not get the structure.. It's entertaining alright but not as competitive in a do or die affair. Football hooligans, fans going crazy after just one goal the passion to fight back.. This is the culture of football and it's all because it's opened and unpredictable.. You have to earn your place and we love it

@Chief We will NEVER allow a closed system without relagation that allows the current big clubs to remain the big clubs forever. The 'big six' are actually Liverpool, Man Utd, Everton, Aston Villa, Leeds and Nottingham Forrest!

@House of Venus U have to remember how Big America is. America didn't create football, now it's trying to boss it, using their way, when the MLS is not like the premier league

@THRIQUILLED Literally no other country in the world can produce the basketball players, Gridiron football players, or Lacrosse players the US can. The US dominates most countries in Olympic events -- all of which follow the closed league/franchise model stateside. The MLS sucks because the MLS sucks -- not because of franchise structure. That structure has created the best athletes on Earth in multiple sporting disciplines. It will work in European football. You ignored my point about Messi and Ronaldo--two players who will never win a World Cup or another Champions League title despite having at least another five years of quality play between them. Why should they languish in the group stage or round of 16 of the Champions League for the rest of their career? Terrible teams finish at the bottom of a table in a franchise system. Just because they play the champions each year doesn't mean they are handsomely rewarded. On the contrary they never fall down to a level where they can delude themselves into thinking they are great for a year. Instead they have to do the hard work of improving the team knowing damn well they will face the Champions every year.

ESL wouldn't kill football & it wouldn't kill the respective leagues. It would kill the Champions League and make a better tournament. (b/c apart from 'permanent' founding qualification, this was a great idea that UEFA feared)

Exactly. The ESL messed up by launching in the middle of the season but it was a great idea!

"apart from 'permanent' founding qualification" this was essentially the Champions's League 2024 revisions. The entire issue *was* the permanent qualification for the majority of teams in the league.

Why is the Super League the fault of Americans? Stupid Anti-Americanism.

Because they want to find a scapegoat and conveniently connect the blame to the American owners with Americans.
