This was great, thanks, I have been researching "astronomy fact of the day" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Ever heard of - Qanailey Riyhloe Domination - (do a search on google ) ? Ive heard some pretty good things about it and my partner got cool results with it.

This is just superb, I've been looking for "trivias about astronomy" for a while now, and I think this has helped. You ever tried - Qanailey Riyhloe Domination - (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now ) ? Ive heard some amazing things about it and my buddy got great success with it.

How different is your job to hers? Also how closley related is astronomy to astrophysics? :D

What people miss is that she is an observatory astronomer. It' ALOT of differences in that and a "regular" astronomer.

Nymul_YT Hawkings field was astrophysics. More theoretical, academic stuff.

@Ja'Nasia Price observatory astronomers pretty much looks at the sky through telescope and studies the data. Sounds boring. Regular astronomers are like the work stephen hawkings did. Going in deapths into space, they do all the interesting stuff

Did not know there was such big telescope and many astronomers in S.A. Its africa!.. Even wonder who is funding them? Afican country funding for science?

The government of South Africa has been investing in astronomy for many years. We not only have the biggest optical telescope in the southern hemisphere, but also the best radio telescope. As with all large-scale scientific projects, we have support from other countries around the world. As far as Africa is concerned, several other African countries are joining South Africa in building radio telescopes in their own country and working together with us to make an amazing world class instrument that will rival US and European efforts.

@bill ray Do you even know what you just said, bro? They do more than looking for stars. They have multiple different type of astronomers. They don't just "look for starts". Also if you can find new stars, planets, and galaxy from your basic computer then do it. You need that extra education to be an astronomer. It is harder than you think. Being an astronomer is hard and there are different types of it so don't be disrespectful. Planetary astronomers focus on the life cycles of planets and the discovery of new planets near other stars. Stellar astronomers study the life cycles of stars, and stellar phenomena such as black holes, nebulae (from which stars are born), white dwarfs, supernovas, and pulsars. Solar astronomers study the sun's systems and characteristics, such as its atmospheres, magnetic field, and storms. They may also research new methods of studying the sun. Galactic astronomers study the Milky Way galaxy, the galaxy in which we live. Cosmologists study the origin, history, and potential futures of the entire universe. Cosmology is an active field of study with several important theories under development, including string theory, dark matter and energy, and multiverses.

@Tana Joseph why do you need maths or something when today we have computer we can build in our own house look for stars it's a pretty shit to go through university etc just to get the title for looking for stars lol

The undergraduate degree would be a in physics (or astronomy if available). This degree should include mathematics, astronomy courses if they are available, some applied mathematics and statistics if possible. And some computer programming.

Astronomers are scientists who study the universe from the surface of the Earth using telescopes. The telescopes can be on the ground or in space, but astronomers are not the ones who go into space to check those space based instruments. That is the job of specially selected and trained astronauts. That is not to say that an astronomer cannot become an astronaut! For more information, check out this answer from an astronaut: www.quora.com/Can-an-astrophysicist-go-into-outer-space-for-a-mission-from-NASA

@Astromuon Kuki Hi! India has a world class radio telescope in Pune, called the Giant Metre Wave Telescope (GMRT) in Pune. The telescope is run by the National Centre for Radio Astrophysics, which is part of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai. I would start with contacting them and perhaps they can give you insight into which path would be best for you. Good luck with your studies!

@Tana Joseph Iam doing BTech Aerospace Engineering in India and want to pursue Astronomy after my BTech. Can you tell me which country be best to pursue MS in astronomy ??? Everyday, every night,I feel like floating in space.Astronomy has been in my blood since birth but couldn't get so far a good telescopes due to financial problems but trying hard to get atleast Dobsonian 8'inch Reflector telescope.

Perhaps these videos too will also help you, to add to what Tana has told you so far. They are very recent. : ruvid.net/video/video-Pv0BQWI3ZGU.html ruvid.net/video/video-8TgQ5BFEEHI.html

Tana Joseph
Tana Joseph 2 years ago
It depends on your job really and what kind of science you are doing . You could be up at the telescope for a night or two or maybe two or three weeks. Astronomers don't live at the telescopes. They spend most of their time at home and work from an office.

I've been thinking about what I want to do in my life. I love astronomy and I would love to go and be an astronomer, and it was really encouraging to hear that her dad studied in Spain. I say that because I also want to possibly study abroad in Spanish speaking countries. But it seems like the kind of job where you don't get to go home and see your family a lot, and that's really important to me... But it does seem like a fun job : )
