The Papadakis Racing team began drifting in 2004 and is the most winning team in Formula Drift history, earning the 2015 title with driver Fredric Aasbo, as well as backto back championship titles with driver Tanner Foust in 2007 and 2008. The Rockstar Energy Drink / Nexen Tire Toyota Corolla Hatchback is the latest competition build from the Hawthorne, California, based team.
Team owner Stephan Papadakis is a legend of sport compact racing who began building his reputation in the 1990s with the first front-wheel drive, tube-chassis drag car in the U.S. The team earned multiple records and championships in the discipline, turning in elapsed times and trap speeds previously thought unattainable in front-drive drag cars. Papadakis' successes in front-wheel drive were matched by his efforts in rear-wheel drive when he campaigned a Honda Civic that became just the fifth car to join the NHRA's Sport Compact 200 MPH club

My Dodge Neon 2 liter engine I used to have had cracked rod ends it was a new technology for consumer engines back then but makes sense for perfect bearing alignment .

Reminds me of a VR6 with the timing chain on the transmission side. In fact the tensioner rails look identical. Except they were smart this time and made the tension adjustable via the outside.

@PapadakisRacing Do you think the silicone will be more reliable than gaskets over time or do you think it will be more prone to leaking?

as time goes on owning one of these cars you can clearly see HUGE BILLS to maintain or fix this engine as the engine compartment is crammed to the max and everything is almost impossible to access... i'd run for dear life away from this car... lol

you mentioned the coating on the connecting rod bearings it appeared that the main bearings were coated as well also it was only the upper rod bearings and the lower main bearings I'm assuming that's due to gravity and downward forces being the main focus and concern

Are you guys gonna do a tear down of the upgraded Supra engine?

just a second what kind of racing do you do 2 stroke?, I don't know what is so special about a normal European Engine but being amazed by an OilFilter and Cracked-Rods or the normal ignition or is a mechanical ignition still up to date( I dont think so roughly went out of serious production around 2000 maybe earlier) now we have the year 2020 , Low friction! really easy to turn... what do you normally work with I'm getting frustrated on my end... this video makes European engines look like witchcraft. PS did Toyota get it right its a Damn BMW engine and for a little hate in this comment check BMW history from beginning to today, P.S. engineering a new engine costs a lot, so modifying a good engine saves MONEY!!! I hope people understand it! and I hope that idiots stop wrecking good setup cars and that Toyota makes a great Na engine again like the 4age in the ae86 or MR2 NA. Rule Die turbos no one needs that terrible whining or 100k+ revving of a turbo , 2020 go to hell and hope for better years to come!!!!!!!!!

I own a 94 Supra Turbo 6-speed. I changed my timing belt , water pump, valve stem seals and a few other things in a few hours. No thanks on that trash timing chain at the back. The 2JZ was developed nearly 30 years ago and still can't be recreated. Haha.

This is not a toyota engine its made by bmw and in my opinion its trash!!!!! 2jz all day baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Its still a POS engine if it takes 30 hours to replace a timing chain. The old 2JZ might have it's issues, but it doesn't need that much labour to fix it. All this new technology is useless really when they are making cars so complex that they have more complexity than a MARS ROVER. Let's see this engine hold up past 150K with no major issues. Good luck on them timing chain guides since they are plastic or any oil leaks at the back of the engine. I'll take a 4 cylinder Honda with Ebay turbos and built internals any day over this POS and still wipe the floor with it. ( i don't even own a honda, but i'm a mechanic for 13 years, and realise how stupid new engines are really and how uselesss and hopeless they are after a certain mileage. )

This looks like an amazing engine. A DiY nightmare. Just say “yes” when it needs service.
Keep it Pinned Productions
Honestly this looks like it was designed by a diesel engine mechanic. Direct cylinder injection, camshaft driven fuel systems, flywheel driven camshafts, and piston squirters.

Well, fun fact. The b58 (petrol) is derived from the b57 (diesel). They share the bottom end and many other parts.

I still can't figure out why they put the timing chain there. I know it drives the oil pump too but I've seen it done other ways that are less of a pain.

You gotta admire the depth of engineering that goes into cars.

So you have to take out the engine to change the timing chain? Yup definitely a German car.

F_ck me they are purposely building them to cause problems! F_ck the oil and water heat exchanger, and the oil pan oil level sensor going through the oil pan, both those ideas are stupid. At least they used a timing chain and not a belt.
Daniel Parks

Timing chain tensioners where? Direct injection with high revs? They are going backwards.
